The speaker on the podium at the 1948 May Day parade is an African-American, symbolic of the fact that a major thrust of the parades during this period dealt with the struggle against racism, including the passage of anti-lynching and other civil rights legislation.  Note the military caps and other regalia worn by platform guards to affirm the patriotism of the parade participants.
